San Francisco Proper Hotel is seeking a dynamic, service-driven Director of People & Culture to join the team at our landmarked 131-room luxury property located in the vibrant Mid-Market district.

The Director of People & Culture plays a critical role in creating an exceptional colleague experience that mirrors the refined, personalized service offered to our guests. This individual will oversee all P&C functions, from talent development to employee relations and compliance, ensuring our hotel operates in line with its values of excellence, service and innovation. The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset, hands-on leadership and a passion for fostering a culture of luxury hospitality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Employee Relations
    • Act as a trusted advisor to management and colleagues, addressing any colleague concerns, conflicts, or workplace issues with confidentiality and professionalism
    • Foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture where employees feel valued and supported

  • Performance Management
    • Design and implement performance evaluation systems that align with hotel goals, coaching managers to provide constructive feedback
    • Identify opportunities for colleague growth and ensure high standards of performance are maintained throughout the hotel

  • Compliance & Risk Management  
    • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal employment laws
    • Develop and enforce HR policies and procedures that uphold the hotel's commitment to fairness, transparency and legal responsibility

  • Compensation & Benefits
    • Oversee the hotel’s compensation structure, ensuring competitive pay and benefits offerings that attract and retain the best talent
    • Regularly review and update benefits programs, and communicate them effectively to colleagues

  • Employee Engagement
    • Lead initiatives that enhance employee engagement and morale, such as recognition programs, wellness initiatives and team-building activities, aligning these efforts with San Francisco Proper's unique brand and culture

  • Strategic HR Leadership
    • Work closely with the General Manager and executive team to align HR strategies with business objectives, supporting our hotel’s growth while maintaining its luxury standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Hospitality Management, or a related field; Master’s degree or HR certification preferred
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of HR experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within the luxury hospitality sector preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of HR principles, employment law, talent management, and organizational development
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Proven ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality while driving HR initiatives that align with business goals
