About Atomic Semi
Atomic Semi is building a small, fast semiconductor fab.
It’s already possible to build this with today’s technology and a few simplifications. We’ll build the tools ourselves so we can quickly iterate and improve.
We’re building a small team of exceptional, hands-on engineers to make this happen. Mechanical, electrical, hardware, computer, and process. We’ll own the stack from atoms to architecture. Our team is optimistic about the future and we want to continue pushing the limits of technology.
Smaller is better. Faster is better. Building it ourselves is better.
We believe our team and lab can build anything. We’ve set up 3D printers, a wide array of microscopes, e-beam writers, general fabrication equipment - and whatever is missing, we’ll just invent along the way.
Atomic was founded by Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller. Sam is best known for making chips in his garage, and Jim has been a leader in the semiconductor industry for the past 40 years.
About the role
The positioning team is responsible for designing, prototyping and building semiconductor fab equipment and subsystems related to lithography, motion and metrology.
We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Electromechanical Engineer to join our team. You will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and building semiconductor fabrication equipment, subsystems, and tools. This role requires a strong mix of mechanical, electrical, and system integration expertise, along with the ability to execute quickly and effectively.
We are seeking a dynamic Electromechanical Engineer with a proven track record of rapidly prototyping complex systems and advancing them to the next stage of production. The ideal candidate moves through design cycles fast and can own the end to end process. Our philosophy is to get things built/tested in days or weeks, not months. Because of this, a portfolio is required to apply: show us the things you’ve actually built!
Responsibilities
Design and iterate on machines, subsystems, test fixtures, inspection tools, and sensors.
Lead system integration efforts, testing, and cross-team coordination.
Develop electrical designs, including PCB design, wiring, power electronics, and sensor integration.
Execute mechanical design of frames, components, and assemblies, with a focus on practical application rather than deep theoretical analysis.
Rapidly prototype, build, and test new designs.
Source and select components while balancing cost, reliability, and performance.
Write light software and firmware to support system operation.
Required Experience
3+ years of industry experience designing and building electromechanical systems for real-world applications
Electromechanical system design and analysis
Electrical instrumentation experience (scopes, meters, sensors)
Mechanical design and CAD proficiency
Hands-on prototyping, fabrication, and assembly
Component sourcing and selection
Light coding and scripting
Nice-to-have
Circuit design and PCB layout (analog and digital)
Experience with metrology and sensor technologies
Motion system selection and control
