Mechanical Engineer (All levels)

Pronto
Full-time
On-site
San Francisco, United States
While most Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology companies are stuck in R&D mode, Pronto is a world-leader in commercializing AV tech via our Autonomous Haulage System, which is automating haulage operations at mines and quarries around the world. Pronto’s team of Silicon Valley veterans has been at the forefront of every major AV development over the past 20 years, with a relentless focus on commercializing the technology, leading to our current specialization in off-road applications. This focus and our decades of experience have put Pronto on a track to become the world’s first profitable AV technology company.

We are looking for a world-class mechanical engineer to help develop the Pronto Autonomous Haulage System - the world's leading off-road AV platform, built by the best engineering team in the sector.

You will be responsible for owning designs through prototype and assembly as well as installing systems onto vehicles as large as 100+ ton haul trucks, while developing documentation to scale installations. All aspects of the role will be very hands-on and will involve fieldwork.

Some travel will be required, both day and overnight trips. Projects could include sensor design and placement, drive-by-wire system hardware design, and system architecture planning. Additionally, projects may be R&D oriented for new vehicle platforms or iterating on existing designs. Some procurement and vendor management responsibilities will likely be required.

We are a small, fast-moving, highly-collaborative team and spend a lot of time on the whiteboard with our Founder / CEO and CTO. You will work closely with the electrical engineering team on both vehicle integration and electromechanical subassembly design.

This job suits folks who like to work with their hands, take things apart, and understand how systems, mechanical or otherwise, work.

What You'll Be Doing:

    • Apply mechanical engineering principles for the development and integration of drive-by-wire hardware including actuators and sensors
    • Travel to customer sites for development and installation of hardware systems
    • Develop bespoke solutions to customer specific problems
    • Refine current hardware kits for efficient scaling
    • Develop vehicle hardware kits for new platform support
    • Develop 2D and 3D CAD models of mechanical and electro-mechanical components and assemblies
    • Create and maintain documentation of design solutions including reports, engineering drawings and Bill of Materials
    • Develop testing and validation procedures for electromechanical systems
    • Build prototypes using various rapid prototyping technologies (e.g. 3D print, laser cut)
    • Source components and manage vendors
    • Work on system level design with a cross-functional team to develop mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions

Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
    • 0-4 years work experience for junior level positions
    • 4-5 years work experience for senior level positions
    • Automotive or heavy equipment industry experience strongly preferredΒ
    • Experience/ expertise with 3D CAD tools
    • Hands on experience building mechanical and/or electrical systems; machine shop and/or fabrication experience preferred
    • Experience designing for CNC machine, sheet metal fab, and 3D print
    • Experience with hydraulic systems is a plus
    • Ability to resolve issues during design, development and execution of mechanical engineering activities
    • Ability to work with limited/general direction and must be able to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team
    • Familiarity with regulatory compliance is a plus (OSHA, CE, CCC, ASME related standards)
    • Familiarity with robotic systems is a plus
    • Be excited about working in person in our downtown San Francisco office.
