Anticipated Hiring Range


$6,365.00 per month ($76,380.00 annually)  or  $6,492.00 per month ($77,904.00 annually)


Salary is commensurate with experience.


 


Position Summary


Responsible for a full range of skilled plumbing work including the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodeling and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler, and refrigeration-related plumbing systems, including automated plumbing systems.


This position's work schedule is subject to change, with appropriate notice.


 


Position Information


All of the below functions are completed to provide an operationally sound and safe facility for learning using a variety of power and hand tools, equipment, and materials.


Participates in the maintenance and operations of a plumbing shop; maintains, troubleshoots, installs, repairs, and tests plumbing systems, fixtures and appurtenances, including backflow prevention devices.



  • Assembles, installs, and repairs pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures, composed of a variety of metals and materials.

  • Clears, maintains & repairs plumbing fixtures; operates drain clearing machines.

  • Cuts, threads, and welds pipes.

  • Maintains laboratory utilities; including laboratory grade water, vacuum, steam, compressed air, gas, and hot and cold water.

  • Inspects work completed for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes, including related work performed by contractors.

  • Estimates cost, time, and materials for plumbing projects & advises on selection, & ordering of plumbing equipment and supplies.

  • Provides instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semiskilled assistants.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Under general supervision, incumbents in this classification perform the full range of skilled journey-level plumbing work as outlined in the series overview. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.


TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade; a base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.


Abilities: Must be able to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems; perform applicable welding work; obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses; make rough sketches of plumbing installations; read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; prepare standard reports; read and write at the level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.


ExperienceThese abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.


 


Preferred Qualifications


Machines, Equipment, Tools and Work Aids Skills:


Various motorized vehicles, including trucks, dump trucks and forklifts; scaffolds, ladders, compressors and pneumatic tools; variety of power, hand and machine tools and test instruments; blueprints and technical reference materials required to determine size, computer and office skills, precision tools and measuring instruments.


 


Required License/Certification


Possess a valid Non-Restricted California Driver's License; comply with the Defensive Drivers Training program requirements if a vehicle is used to travel on official business.


Ability to obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses.


 


Environmental/Physical/Special


Considerable physical effort and intermittent exposure to inclement weather/working conditions; must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; exposure to work environments that include: lack of adequate ventilation, cramped quarters, and toxic conditions; superior hand/eye coordination for manipulating tools and plumbing appurtenances; utilizes powerful hand, power, and machine tools.


Wears distinctive clothing, safety shoes, and personal protective equipment appropriate to the job at hand, provided by the University at all times when in pay status.
