The International School of San Francisco is a PK-12 independent school in San Francisco.  Founded in 1962, the school is a multicultural, multilingual educational institution with over 1,100 students across an urban campus in the heart of the city.

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant delivers accurate financial information to support the School’s business functions.  This position provides primary support to the Controller in preparation of financial reports, audit preparation and other projects as needed.  Additionally, this position requires the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment, including establishing priorities and implementing policies and procedures. To be successful, a candidate must be a self reliant quick learner with impeccable integrity.  Experience working in a school would be a plus.  French language skills are a plus.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions, with a focus on Accounts Payable.  This position would ensure compliance with school’s purchasing procedures 
  • Maintains the general ledger by transferring subsidiary accounts, preparing a trial balance, and reconciling entries 
  • Avoids legal challenges by complying with legal requirements
  • In conjunction with the Controller and Accounts Receivable, secures financial information by completing database backups
  • Support the Controller in documenting and monitoring internal controls in support of the auditing team


Other Duties

  • Owns the AP process from start to completion, about 30 - 50 invoices per week
  • Acts as backup for payroll by initiating computer processing; printing checks, verifying the finished payroll
  • Assist in creating, maintaining, and completing audit schedules for the Controller
  • Analyze complex financial reports and records
  • Prepare journal entries and submit to Controller for review
  • Perform variance analyses and prepare account reconciliations
  • Prepare financial reports
  • Acts as backup for student billing and accounts receivable
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Requirements

  • 2 - 3 years of general accounting experience, nonprofit experience is a plus
  • Must have experience with complex account systems such as Blackbaud Nxt, Sage Intacct., or similar 
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field

Salary Range for this position is $70,000 - $85,000
