POSITION OVERVIEW


 


The Staff Accountant I role is responsible for the day-to-day corporate accounting, includes HomeRises accounts payable and grants & contracts, individual donation, special events and intercompany billing. Primary responsibilities require the ongoing monitoring of corporate fund statements for erroneous issues and resolution of accounting problems/errors, preparation of timely invoices for disbursement of grant/contract funds; support budget production for corporate and grants & contracts; and functioning as liaison internally as well as externally for all corporate cost centers. The Staff Accountant is required to maintain a collaborative working relationship with HomeRises department heads and other related personnel. Successful performance of the work requires considerable knowledge of governmental accounting principles as well as GAAP and the ability to exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines. This role will report to Accounting Manager and is full-time exempt position.


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


 


General Ledger



  • Process, review & reconcile timely and accurate cash receipts, deposits, accounts receivable, cash disbursements, and accounts payable; this includes monthly close and reconciliation of corporate activities.

  • Provide essential bookkeeping data entry and extract accounting data to facilitate the timely billing and complete monthly corporate close.

  • Prepare and post general journal entries. Prepare and review bank reconciliations, trial balances, general ledgers, and other balance sheet account reconciliations.

  • Prepare audit schedules, audit preparatory material, and support onsite work with the Director of Finance.


Grants & Contracts Billing



  • Manage monthly invoicing and billing process for two large, complex City of San Francisco contracts.

  • Manage financial administration of concurrent grants both public and private with various payment methods, compliance and reporting requirements and deadlines.

  • Review payroll allocations to grants before payroll is posted, and ensure the allocation of personnel aligns with budgets.

  • Closely monitor grant and contract performance for fiscal compliance with grant terms and effective expenditure of all funds by end of fiscal and/or grant period.

  • Work with Accounting Manager and Corporate Accountant for monthly Government grant receivables.

  • Ensure accurate and timely development and alignment of grant and contract budgets with organizational operating budgets, as well as accurate analysis and clear presentation of this information.

  • Provide financial support for fiscal year public grants budget process as well as budget amendments.


Accounts Payable



  • Review and process vendor invoices, requests for disbursement and employee statement of expenses for accuracy, general ledger coding, proper documentation and levels of approval, and compliance to CHP policies. Monitor due dates to ensure timely payment.

  • Reconcile vendor statements. Identify, research and resolve vendor account discrepancies.

  • Respond and resolve all inquiries from employees and vendors in a professional and timely manner.


Other Duties



  • Cross train with staff accountants to support as needed.

  • Work with the Director of Finance in developing and implementing fiscal policies, internal controls, and accounting manual.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.

  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with employees and vendors. Ability to garner necessary information from relationships in order to accomplish job functions.


 


POSITION DETAIL


 



  • Location: Administrative Office, 251 Post Street, Suite 200 San Francisco, CA 94102 (Hybrid)

  • Status: Full-Time / Exempt - On-Site

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday 9 am - 5 pm

  • Reports to: Controller


Qualifications


  • BS/BA in Accounting or related field preferred, equivalent experience will be considered.

  • The position requires a highly organized and detail-oriented person with excellent computer skills, who is able to manage many tasks and projects at once.

  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills, both written and verbal and strict adherence to confidentiality.

  • Thorough understanding of GAAP requirements.

  • Non-profit affordable housing real estate development accounting experience preferred.

  • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, databases, etc.) experience with ERP, Sage MIP and Yardi preferred.

  • Knowledge of and strong skills in the use of accounting and budgeting software.

  • High degree of accuracy in data-entry and filing.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple priorities and function independently and to work as a team member.
