About this role:

As a Staff Product Designer on the Design Systems team at Samsara, you will play a critical role in shaping and scaling the design foundation that powers Samsara’s web and mobile experiences. Our design system, Kit, is at the heart of our product ecosystem, enabling teams across multiple business units to build cohesive, high-quality user experiences.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about design systems at scale, deeply collaborative with engineering, and able to influence teams across the organization. In this role, you will define and evolve our component libraries, design tokens, accessibility standards, documentation, and governance model, ensuring that our system meets the needs of both our internal teams and Samsara’s diverse customer base.

You will work closely with Product Design, Engineering, and cross-functional partners to align on priorities, drive adoption, and ensure that the design system evolves strategically alongside our platform. You will also engage directly with customers—both internal (product designers, engineers) and external (end users who experience our system’s impact)—to ensure that our design system enables best-in-class product experiences.

This is a remote position open to candidates based in the United States.

You should apply if:

  • You are a systems thinker at heart: You thrive on creating scalable solutions, thinking beyond individual features to build the foundations that empower designers and developers across an entire platform.
  • You want to build for impact at scale: Your work will affect every product, feature, and user interaction at Samsara, influencing how we maintain consistency, accessibility, and efficiency across web and mobile platforms.
  • You believe in cross-functional collaboration: You enjoy partnering with design, engineering, product, and leadership to create a shared vision, ensure alignment, and drive adoption of a design system.
  • You’re energized by complexity: You know that design systems aren’t just about components—they involve governance, process, adoption strategies, and continuous evolution to meet changing business needs.
  • You want to be with the best: At Samsara, we win as a team, celebrate together, and support each other. You will be surrounded by a high-caliber team of designers and engineers who push the boundaries of design excellence.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the evolution of Samsara’s Design System (Kit) across web and mobile, improving component libraries, design tokens, accessibility, and documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to ensure high-quality component implementation, improve developer handoff, and drive adoption of the system.
  • Define and refine governance models, contribution processes, and best practices to ensure the design system is scalable and maintainable.
  • Partner with product designers and cross-functional teams to identify gaps, establish design standards, and ensure that the system enables great user experiences.
  • Advocate for accessibility, usability, and design excellence by embedding these principles into our system and educating teams on their importance.
  • Work with internal customers (designers, engineers) and external users to validate design decisions and system improvements.
  • Drive alignment and strategic influence with design, product, and engineering leadership to secure buy-in and roadmap prioritization for design system initiatives.
  • Measure impact by tracking system adoption, efficiency gains, and design quality improvements across Samsara’s product suite.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 7+ years of experience in product design, with at least 3 years working on design systems (either dedicated or with significant contributions).
  • Expertise in interaction and visual design, with a deep understanding of UI patterns, accessibility best practices, and front-end technologies.
  • Strong experience in Figma, including component libraries, tokens, auto-layout, and advanced prototyping.
  • Portfolio showcasing your craft, ability to scale design systems, and quantifiable impact on team efficiency, design quality, or product consistency.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with product designers, engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong systems thinking and problem-solving abilities, ensuring the design system balances flexibility and standardization.

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience scaling and governing a design system in a fast-growing, multi-product company.
  • Strong partnership with engineering to implement design tokens, improve component quality, and define technical feasibility.
  • Experience developing contribution models, governance structures, and documentation frameworks that support product teams at scale.
  • A passion for accessibility and experience embedding accessibility standards within design systems.
  • A track record of strategic influence, driving alignment across teams, securing buy-in, and shipping impactful improvements to a design system.
