About the Role
Volunteers are a vital part of the SF SPCA’s success, supporting teams across the organization. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator for Community Medicine (VEC CM) will use best practices in volunteer management to recruit and engage volunteers for the Community Medicine Department and the Central Valley Expansion Project. This role will ensure volunteers have meaningful, safe, and impactful experiences.
As part of the Vision 2030 Plan, the Central Valley Expansion Project aims to provide access to veterinary care through spay/neuter and vaccine clinics in key areas, including Fresno, Tulare, Kings Counties, and Stockton. The VEC CM will collaborate closely with SF SPCA staff in these locations to support their volunteer needs.
In addition, the VEC CM will coordinate volunteers for San Francisco’s Community Medicine Department, which focuses on preventing disease, increasing access to care, reducing animal abandonment, and controlling pet populations through spay/neuter services. The role also includes creating new volunteer opportunities within the department and supporting the Community Medicine Programs Manager.
This position reports to the Director of Volunteer Engagement.
Core Responsibilities
Volunteer Coordination (Community Medicine)
- Recruit, onboard, train, and schedule volunteers for Mobile Vaccine Clinics and TNR (cat trapping) programs.
- Maintain and grow volunteer numbers through recruitment and retention strategies.
- Oversee volunteer activities at monthly Mobile Vaccine Clinics.
- Ensure volunteers are well-trained and able to safely perform necessary tasks.
- Develop new volunteer roles and opportunities within Community Medicine programs.
Central Valley Expansion Project
- Recruit volunteers for Central Valley mobile vaccine and spay/neuter clinics.
- Collaborate with Central Valley Ambassadors to ensure volunteer coverage and support.
- Communicate role expectations and shift schedules, responding promptly to volunteer inquiries.
Volunteer Engagement & Administration
- Manage volunteer data and reporting using our Volunteer Management System (Salesforce).
- Lead monthly meetings with Mobile Vaccine Clinic and Community Cat volunteers.
- Participate in planning and execution of volunteer events, while also assisting with cross-departmental volunteer requests.
- Update volunteer guidelines, protocols, and training materials to reflect program needs.
- Oversee Community Cat mapping database and cat trap inventory.
Training & Communication:
- Develop and maintain volunteer training curricula for Community Medicine needs.
- Recruit and train volunteer mentors to support new volunteers through classes and hands-on experience.
- Provide consistent communication to volunteers about program updates, events, and organizational developments.
- Offer conflict resolution support for volunteers and manage corrective actions as needed.
- Bachelor Degree, qualifying work experience may be considered as an alternative
- Minimum one year program development experience
- Previous experience as a volunteer and supervising volunteers preferred
- Previous customer service and training experience
- Available to work weekends regularly, and evenings and holidays as needed
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven innovator and out-of-box problem solver
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and motivate people
- Proven knowledge and familiarity with safe animal handling methods
- Ability to carry out basic veterinary procedures preferred
- Comfortable working in a veterinary and animal shelter environment
- Understanding of isolation and quarantine for patient disease management
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA
- Skilled at creating and delivering innovative and engaging training
- Ability to comfortably speak before groups of people
- Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse communities of staff, volunteers, and donors
- Solid computer skills and database experience
- Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment, embrace and foster change, problem solve, and multi-task
- Ability to handle calmly and efficiently situations ranging from routine to emergency
- Knowledge of dog and cat behavior, body language, and animal welfare issues
Salary & Benefits
The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $70,000 - $75,000.
